J-Caring Receives More Than 1,200 Calls Annually

Stephanie*, 65, has always been in good health. But, earlier this year, she began navigating life with a new cancer diagnosis. She has no family nearby and needed support services for independent living.

Stephanie called J-Caring a few months ago to see what services and added support might be available to her. She was matched with a care navigator who assessed Stephanie’s needs and explored home care service options for medical assistance and companionship.

The care navigator also connected Stephanie with the American Cancer Society for access to support groups. Stephanie can now share her experiences and draw strength from others who are facing similar challenges.

With these comprehensive supports in place, Stephanie has experienced a profound improvement in her overall well-being.

Connecting Clients to Support Services for Independent Living

J-Caring is a collaboration between JSSA and The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, and a number of community partners. The groups work together to assist the National Capital Region with finding access to resources they need, when they need them.

During Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024), J-Caring received more than 1,600 calls from 1,246 callers. Most clients were older adults (or were calling about older adults), but other top areas of concern include transportation, mental health support, financial assistance, and housing. Winter months had the highest call volume.

According to our call logs and reports, most clients who called J-Caring in FY24 had their treatment goals met.

Like Stephanie, Henry*, a young adult living in Montgomery County, called J-Caring this year and was matched with a care navigator. Henry is living with Autism and wants to be able to live on his own. Henry’s care navigator worked with him and his mother to enroll him in an employment program and case management services that have been instrumental in helping him find work and

school opportunities that will support his goal of living independently.

Those in need of help and services can call 703-J-CARING (703-522-7464) Monday – Friday, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET. A J-Caring provider will provide referrals and connections to community resources to help address your needs. For more information, visit https://www.jssa.org/services/hotline/.
